To test if the sensor is working fine, put a 2×4 plank laid flat on the floor, directly underneath the open garage door. When the door starts to go down and is about to hit the wood, it should reverse its way and go back up again.
If the door continued working its way down and hit the wood, then something is already wrong with the sensor. This just means that the light beam wasn’t able to see the wood as an obstruction. Call your garage door service right away to have it fixed.
